COMMUNITIES

We will promote community cohesion through building good community relations between diverse communities and public bodies. We will use our skills in conflict resolution to combat inter-community conflict. We will tackle threat from the far right and extremist groups by developing solutions through joint working with voluntary and statutory agencies. We will endeavour to provide comprehensive support to victims of discrimination, violence and hate crimes.


Build Good Community Relations

  • Advise Manchester City Council on developments and issues within new and established BME communities.
  • Understanding of needs and issues leads to appropriate policies and strategies.
  • Establish, organise and drive community forums, as the need arises.
  • Community issues addressed and relations between Manchester City Council (MCC) and communities enhanced.
  • Identify and promote good practice between religious institutions and communities across the city.
  • Understanding, communication, youth engagement, tolerance and harmony.
  • Promote religious tolerance through specific events, e.g. Adam Day, Abraham’s Table.
  • Good community relations between people of all faiths in Manchester.
  • Liaise between BME communities and public bodies to resolve community issues of disagreement.
  • Issues of disagreement resolved and community relations enhanced.
  • Liaise between new and established communities to resolve community issues.

Raise Aspirations and Improve Wellbeing

  • This will enhance communities’ and individuals’ aspirations, increase their sense of wellbeing and pride and have an impact on their quality of life.

Combat Extremism

  • Undertake work to ensure that the far right is not able to establish an effective presence in Manchester.
  • Attempts by the far right to establish a political foothold in Manchester are prevented.
  • Work with public bodies and community leaders to ensure that extremist and terrorist groups are not able to establish an effective presence in Manchester.
  • Extremism and violence prevented.

Crime & Racial Discrimination

Delivery

Outcomes

  • Work with public bodies and community groups to help address youth, drugs, gang and knife crime.
  • Reduced violence and increased safety for young people.
  • Provide support to individuals and organisations that are victims of racial discrimination or racial harassment.
  • Victims of race hate crimes supported.
  • Make employment discrimination referrals to appropriate agencies with the expertise and resources to represent victims.
  • Victims of employment discrimination receive legal advice and support.
