Manchester’s most famous and successful boxing clubAfter the riots in 1981, Moss Side amateur boxing club was formed. Above the co-op on Princess Road Moss Side, under the guidance of the late Phil Martin, who was a former Light Heavyweight Professional boxer. Phil Martin whom after a short time fighting cancer, sadly passed away 27th May 1994. Leaving his legacy behind. Many of the lads training at the gym had good tradesmen skills which helped towards the construction of the gym as it is known today. Brick layers, joiners, plumbers, electricians and steel fabricators. Phil Martin had a vision that with so many young people living in and around the Moss Side area it would be great to create top class amateurs and professionals Boxers. In the mid 80’s we had our first ABA finalist and by the end of the 1980’s, the gym was well recognised through out the country as producing top class boxers both amateur and professional. One of the key factors with Phil Martins training methods was physical fitness. Phil believed if you were fitter and stronger than your opponent you stood a greater chance of overpowering or out working your opponent. During the mid 1990’s, the professional side of the gym, better known as Champs Camp became the only gym in the country to have four British Champions at the same time. The Champs Camp held Cruiserweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight and Lightweight titles. The amateur side of the gym is now up and running with a healthy number of young people working out. The professional side has nine young fighters training at the moment. A number of these fighters will be making their pro debut in August 2010.
